Lolokosh Guild
« on: December 23, 2019, 05:04:02 PM »
The Lolokosh Guild was established in 62 Traliers by two drinking buddies, Ackja Lolokosh, a wandering bard, and Japa Zouza, a maker of various stringed instruments. Originally the guild was established because of Ackja's complaint to his friend about how difficult it was to find an artisan who crafted a quality viol and worse, how many young musicians seemed to be unable to discern a quality musical instrument. After an evening of drunken discussion of the shortcomings of the younger members in their respective fields, the two friends vowed to create a guild to rectify these shortcomings. Along with two mighty hangovers, the Lolokosh guild is what emerged the next day. The present day guild is an organization of bards, musicians and musical instrument makers

About the Lolokosh Guild

The Lolokosh Guild is unique among the city's guilds in that it has two guildmasters, with each guildmaster being selected in entirely different ways.

One guildmaster is always a musical instrument maker, who is required to be a master artisan with his own shop. The guildmaster is selected by a vote of all those who are eligible for the position. A vote is held for the position every five years, or when the present guildmaster vacates her position.

The other guildmaster is always a master bard, who is selected by her predecessor, and approved by the other guildmaster.

The present guildmasters are Hon Rofd and Melia Arton. Hon Rofd is a rather stodgy, straight laced master artisan whose shop is best known for its original founder creating a unique lyre known as an Adlerlyre (see below). Melia Arton is a relatively young master bard known for her long golden locks, brilliant blue eyes, flawless soprano voice and flirtatious ways, particularly with the younger noble class. Despite their many differences, the two guildmasters have a very good working relationship.

The Lolokosh Guild building is located in Dreok Cross, surrounded by the various shoppes owned by the city's musical instrument makers. Nestled among the various shoppes and the guild building itself it Tunder's Tavern, the tavern in which Ackja Lolokosh and Japa Zouza first met, and in which every night can be found some of the best musicians in Alderworth and beyond.

Although the guild building has a few rooms for travellers, for the most part these rooms are reserved for travelling bards and musicians who wish to serve as instructors for the guild's students. Master artisans who are guild members are expected to provide room and board for their apprentices and traveling instrument makers. Instead of providing rooms for wandering bards and musicians, the guild will find "gigs" for its musician members, which include room and board while the musician is singing for her supper.

Membership Criteria

There are two ways to become a member of the Lolokosh guild. A person who is apprenticed to a master artisan in good standing with the guild automatically becomes a guild member themselves, and remains a guild member as long as they remain in their profession, and meet the standards set by the guild.

For those who aspire to be bards and other types of musicians, the process is different. The aspiring student must audition in front of a panel of guild members, including one or both guild masters. If they pass the audition, the musician is expected to spend at least a year training in the Guild's classes. Classes in that year include learning how to read and write musical notation, learning how to identify quality musical instruments, and learning how to play the Alderlyre.

(The Alderlyre is a type of a lyre unique to Alderworth. The Alderlyre is approximately two and a quarter feet in length, made from the shell of an adolescent giant armadillo as its back, with a local wood used in creation of its soundbox. The Alderlyre has a unique timbre which makes it more suitable to playing with a group of instruments rather than solo).

For those who aspire to be bards, they must also exhibit a quality singing voice and the capacity for magic. Training takes at least three years, and might include tutelage at Meadows Ridge Academy. Aspiring bards also will have to learn to construct an instrument unique to themselves. As can be expected, aspiring bards will receive instruction from a master artisan and visiting bards, as well as the bard Guildmaster herself.

(At present, the only Bardic College is the College of Lore. Other colleges may become available in future expansions).

In addition, members who become bards are expected to regularly contribute to the musical and stories library of the guild. This expectation is not expected from non-bard musicians, but is highly encouraged.

Plausible quest for Lolokosh Guild

Make them sing while you sing -- At the bequest of one of Lolokosh sister guilds, a bard is sent to a tavern to ostensibly entertain its patrons, but in reality to ferret out information from one of its guests

Benefits of Guild Memberships

Access to the extensive Guild Library
Room and Board at local taverns or halls, as long as the member is willing to sing for their supper
Access to the best musical instruments

I like the details in this guild, even though I was not planning on having more guilds. This guild makes sense to have in Alderworth and additionally explains the gap I was looking to fill in regards to Bards being allowed on Exonia. I would suggest keeping this guild small/average size. The three main guilds (Sunbrawlers, Brightlanders, and Marblevale) are the biggest in Alderworth as they represent most of Alderworth. The Lolokosh Guild reason to stay small is that Bards and musicians are traveling people that go from spot to spot, but I could see them operate throughout the city for sure.

I was thinking the same thing, about keeping it a small guild. It's primary members would be the musical instrument makers, with the next group being the non-magical  musicians (i.e., nonbards). Even if Alderworth had the reputation as the source of the greatest musical instruments in Exonia, musical instruments would still be a niche market. As far as bards, I would say months might go by with the bardic guildmaster being the only bard (and this includes student bards) in the city.

What I was thinking is that, although musical notation might not have been invented in Alderworth, it could be the first place that a consistent system of musical notation has been established, so that anyone trained at the Alderworth Guild's school could read any "sheet music" in their library. The Guild could be, in fact, a burgeoning music academy, the first one of its type in Exonia. This would attract musicians and potential musicians to Alderworth, which would in turn provide a market for the city's musical instrument makers.

The staff of the guild would include a couple of older musicians who prefer warm beds to travel on the road, and who also serve as librarians for the guild's music and story library. The guild could serve as a clearinghouse for "gigs" at taverns and events, and perhaps some of the nobles might become patrons of talented musicians and composers, a la the Renaissance Italian City States.

Student bards would be trained on Alderworth style music notation, but a good deal of their training would be done apprentice style.

As for as the Alderlyre, that's based on the real world charango! :P
