The Barren Tips / Re: [Quest] Spiders of the Barren's

“Well... that was fun.”

Taral looked over to Deryn, hearing her make light of this sadly necessary act of arachnicide. She decided to give the Rogue the benefit of the doubt and not press her. Given their ‘success’, it was likely they’d be working together in the future. No sense in making an enemy now, when there was a nonzero chance that Deryn didn’t mean anything by her remarks.

“No, stranger,” she said to the man they’d just rescued and whose wounds she’d treated. “Who are you, and what did you do to earn the spiders’ attention?”

Taral returned to her Ithiris form beside the man, landing gracefully. She lifted her hand and from it, a poison mist sprayed from the palm.

Regrettably, one of the spiders hit her hand at the worst possible moment. The green liquid landed on the ground, burning through a patch of grass. She growled and spat, before drawing her dagger and slashing up. The leg that deflected her poison was cut off, and her slash also caught a bit of its disgusting mouthpiece. A bit of poison leaked from an open wound.

"We need to move him, hide him. Damnnit... Taral, if you can heal him, do so now, and get him away if possible,"

Deryn had found herself next to her. Good. She wasn’t doing this alone.

“On it. Cover me.”

Taral knelt in front of the injured man and laid the palm of her hand on his injured leg. She felt energy transfer from herself into him, reinforcing the tissues and beginning to close his wounds. “Can you walk?” she asked him.

As the ice blast caught one of the spiders by its legs, Taral closed her eyes and allowed her body -- clothes, equipment, and all -- to transform. Her mass seemed to shrink into a specific point as she transformed from a medium-sized green-haired Ithiris into a Blue Morpho butterfly mid-flight.

She flew high above the spiders and looked for an appropriate landing spot. She waited patiently for her comrades-in-arms to draw off more spiders, hovering about a meter from the wounded man. She was ready to revert to her humanoid form once enough spiders moved away.

"We can attract the spiders to us," Taral suggested, "with noise and violence and the like. It should draw them from him toward us. But there are enough spiders and even one of them by itself can kill that man with ease."

She took a deep breath. "I don't want to kill them, but I think we have to."

She looked at her teammates, including at tree-bound Lia. "If you all attract the spiders this way, I can get to his side and repel any that ignore you." The green-haired-and-tailed Ithiris waited for some of her comrades to agree before she acted. Her idea would leave her isolated from the group, after all.

Taral watched the Rogue attempt the climb she had recommended and fall. Concerned, she thought about moving closer, but instead people were congregating near her own location. She saw the splinter in Deryn’s hand. It looked nasty.

She took Deryn by the wrist and looked more closely. After a moment, she withdrew her dagger and looked Deryn in the eye. “This will sting a moment. We’ll get it out on three.—”

Before even finishing the number two, she deftly slid her dagger under the splinter, cutting Deryn’s hand ever so slightly. She pulled the nasty invader out, withdrew the dagger, and held her other palm over the injury. She whispered the incantation for the spell known as Cure Wounds, which slowly closed the gap in Deryn’s skin.

She smiled up at the Rogue, and then looked up to the Artificer in the tree. She didn’t really want to yell up at her, not wanting to attract any more attention from the spiders. Instead, she tried pointing at branches that she thought could be used as a path over the feasting arachnids. Would Lia understand?

"This tends to complicates things...."

Taral sighed as she saw several spiders ahead of the group, feasting away. There was very likely no avoiding harming these creatures, whom the sorceress Ithiris had said were under the influence of a magic user. "Whoever is influencing these beasts will pay for his or her crimes."

She looked for some path around the spiders, like a trail that went around them, giving them a wide berth. She had no such luck. However....

"Anyone interested in climbing some trees today?"

She pointed to the tree canopy. Low enough that the party could probably climb up, high enough that they would be safe from the spiders, and strong enough that they'd not break under their weight. But there was a risk of fall. If someone fell into the cluster of spiders, they would need to fight.

The Druid examined the body of the giant dead spider after the Ranger had left it with the vial of poison. Leaving it like it was naught but trash. But she knew better.

Taral retrieved her dagger and cut open the spider. She carefully, deftly, opened the carapace, being careful not to damage anything underneath. After a moment, she let out a sigh. “The fatal injury damaged most of the abdomen. A lot of this is ruined. But we mustn’t waste anything. Her death must not be entirely tragic.”

She cut open each leg and pulled out as much meat as she could. Spider meat wasn’t the best, but cooked right she knew she could feed the party something delicious.

“You gave as much as you could,” she whispered to the spider corpse. “Thank you.”

She stood and faced the rest of the party. “Alright. Let’s find out what’s driven them to attack people.”

"No," Taral said, shaking her head as they walked. "I've studied maps of the area but I spend most of my time in the Western woods. From what I have seen though, it looks to be very pretty."

"How do you propose that we stop them from attacking trade convoys in the future? We can't just go in there and wipe out an entire species and while I've never ran into spiders during my hunting expeditions I'm most certain that there are other nests in the area..."

“I agree with the Ranger,” Taral declared, her eyes locked with Sophie’s. “I won’t be party to an extermination. But something has made these spiders either more numerous or more aggressive. Or both. Or something that’s just making them go after the merchants instead of their usual feeding grounds. I would wager that there’s some other force at play, whether natural or man-made. It might even be something the merchants are doing.” She knew merchants well, and wouldn’t be surprised if they were responsible for the attacks. “We find what’s disrupting the spiders and fix that. Problem solved. We get our coin. All without killing an innocent spider.”

Taral walked away from the desk to stand with her new team. The Rogue who appeared to be with the Shadowshapers. The Sunbrawler Ranger. The Ithiris Sorceress who was the same age she was. She looked familiar; they had probably crossed paths before at the Academy.

“So we’re hunting spiders then?” she asked, not really to anyone. She looked to the Sorceress. “What does the pamphlet say about the spiders? Size, numbers, anything like that?”

Taral knew this part of the Citadel well. Though she was more familiar with the Alderworth Guards' real Headquarters, this gathering place for those willing to take on quests for the city and the guilds was one she came to often enough as a girl. But this was her first time in this part of North Creolluc since the ultimatum that drove her from her family home.

A low profile was critical. She risked being recognized by those who knew her family. And try as she might, she just wasn't very good as sneaking. Even under a cloak, her small stature and vibrant teal hair, ears, and tail were all too easy to spot. So instead of walking into the neighbourhood as normal, in the privacy of an outhouse she transformed herself into a cat first. Nobody looked twice at a stray cat wandering the streets, likely hunting a mouse or finding scraps in the trash. The most attention she got was a little boy who wanted to scratch behind her ears. She obliged him before venturing further and into an alley next to the quest building, where she returned to Ithiris form. Taral gave a silent thanks for her Druid training, put her hood up, and as unassumingly as possible entered the building, nodding to the guards but showing evidence of her membership in the Marblevale Guild as she passed.

There were a few people present, mostly human, but a shorter Ithiris was among them too.

She approached the desk and sidled next to the medium-sized human woman already present. "Excuse me, but I'm also looking for a quest to perform on behalf of the city."

What do you call yourself?

How'd you find Exonia?
Friends with RaWolfe and other players

What interested you in joining?
Interesting setting, and I have experience with the DM. I know his writing quality and how much attention he puts in.

Ever done this text-based roleplaying thing before?
Yes, but never in a forum before. I may need help sometimes.

Any previous experiences you want to share?
I run a game in the Bravofleet network, and have been on quite a number of mostly Star Trek based RP games in the past year. I also played for a number of years in 2003-2007, but stopped for a while.

Now for the questionnaire!

Do you prefer:
  • Playing male, female, or other-gendered characters?: I play any gender, but I do have more female than male characters right now.
  • Spontaneous or planned RP?: I like to plan a story out if I'm running it, and I like pre-planned arcs for my characters.
  • Military or civilian characters?: Normally military, with some civilian background. Some of my favourites to write spent time doing something else before joining the main game setting.
  • Humans, Ithiris or something else?: In this, I chose an Ithiris. In D&D, I only just played my first Human.
  • Being in a guild or being solo?: These games are best played with other people, so I'd want to play with others in a Guild setting.
  • Roleplay via forum posts or in real-time?: I've never done Real-Time (except in-person). I'd want to try that some time.
On a scale of 1 to 3, what's your preferred level of these in your RP:
  • Language: 3
  • Violence: 2-3
  • Sexuality: 2
What's something cool you'd love to RP?
I'm not sure. Some fun adventure that lets my character grow as a person. As a Druid who grew up in nobility, I'd love some adventure that makes her protect the land and confront of her family, who are perhaps over-exploiting it.
