“Fair enough,” Theodore replied, filling mugs of ale and passing them around the fire. “We’ll gather brush and wood tomorrow then. There’s an axe in the wagon. How do you all want to divide up watches?” he asked, sipping his ale and tearing a chunk off of the half loaf of bread he had with his stew.

Theodore listened to Temisar’s suggestion and considered. “Could we block up the entrance somehow?” he wondered. “Collapse it, or maybe with some of these trees?”

Sascha returned with some edible plants and Theodore retrieved the camping equipment from the wagon for her to start up her stew.

The reminder of the kiss the druid had given the ranger made Theo fumble a bit.

Theodore trooped down the trail after the others. He started the fire as Temisar hunted squirrels, and pulled out some of the rations they had brought as well. A pair of squirrels weren’t going to serve four people, especially when one was his size.

“Could we find the other entrance?” Theo asked. “Maybe block it up, smoke them out?” he mused. “Could be we just make this cave uninhabitable, and they move on elsewhere.” He looked at the cayenne peppers Temisar had brought. “Burning those in the fire might make some nasty smoke that might foul the cave for a while.”

“Depends. Did they buy me dinner first?” Theodore joked. He helped the ladies climb down the stony cliff again until they were on the forest floor and heading back down the path toward the wagon. “Probably wouldn’t hurt to set watches,” he told them. “Maybe keep the fire going. That would probably keep them away.”

Theodore stood there with the rope as Eulalia climbed out of the hole. “Well, okay, then,” he said, starting to wind up the rope. “Camp sounds good,” he said. “It’s getting late. We aren’t really on a time table, so we could take them out one at a time as they come out during the day. Better than getting trampled in a tight space in a cave. More room to move, get out of the way. And we could use that bow of yours and not risk getting close.” He reached down to help Eulalia up to her feet again.

Theodore shook his head. “I haven’t felt her do it,” he said. “I hope she does. That would be...distressing if she fell.” He peered down the hole. He didn’t want to yell down at her, in case it disturbed the armadillos.

The rogue hadn’t tugged the rope or anything. Theodore wondered if she’d seen it. Hopefully she would be okay, because there was no way he was fitting down that hole. So he simply tied the rope off around his wrist so he could feel any tug, and leaned back against the rock wall, looking over at the beautiful ranger not far away at the other hole.

“So you have any plans for all the money we’ll make from this haul?” he asked Temisar.

Theodore sheathed the new sword and rejoined the discussion. “Might as well do the easy part, then, and gather the mushrooms before we try killing the armored bears,” he had to agree. He didn’t expect little Eulalia to just shimmy up the cliff face and into the holes right off

“Um...maybe we do it without the risk of falling?”

Theo grabbed the rope and climbed up to the cave entrances, settling opposite Temisar. He pulled out his rope and secured it, then started lowering it into the hole. “Hopefully she gets the message,” he told the attractive ranger.

Theodore grinned as he stared at the sword. He studied the snowflake rune on the hilt. “I told you there was something more to this sword if it had stayed in this condition out here this long,” he said. “I’ve only heard of such things, but I think it’s a magic sword.”

“No one is here killing armadillos for fun,” Theo told Sascha. “We’re killing them for coin. And we’ll take as much as we can. That’s what the wagon is for,” he assured the druid. “It’s not like we can talk to them and convince them to stop trampling the sacred mushrooms and farmer’s fields and all that,” he pointed out to the woman.

“Well, if that sword is in that good a condition after being out here this long, I’m thinking there is more to it than just steel,” Theodore said. He pulled the sword and scabbard off of the man. “I don’t think you’ll be needing this, my friend. Hopefully you are in a better place.” Pulling the sword from the scabbard, he took a few experimental swipes with it, testing its weight and balance.

Then another woman emerged from the trees, and Theo stared as Temisar the ranger went up and...kissed her?! Damn. That was hot, Theo thought, all thoughts of armadillos now no longer in his head.

Temisar was pulling on climbing gear, and Theo blinked, trying to push away the images of her and this Sasha girl. “Um, climbing, right,” he said. “I don’t have any climbing gear except rope, but I’m not a bad climber,” he told the ranger as he pulled out his rope.

Theo looked over at Sasha. “I wouldn’t get too worried, beautiful,” he told the druid. “These aren’t...normal armadillos. They’re way bigger than they should be. We saw one earlier that was the size of a grizzly bear!”

“No sense leaving a nice sword like that lying out here,” Theodore said. “And we can give the bloke some kind of decent burial. Maybe find out who he is and if he’s got family in the city. Then check out those smaller tunnels. Maybe there’s a kind of gallery overlooking the armadillos that we could just shoot at them like fish in a barrel and they can’t get to us.”

Theodore followed along behind the two ladies. He didn’t really like them being in danger up ahead, but he wasn’t a woodsman. So he just kept alert in case trouble found them and he could intervene.

At the log trap, he scowled. “We should disable that before it kills someone,” he mentioned. But it looked like they were leaving it behind them. Hopefully they wouldn’t have to go fleeing down the trail.

When the reached the bluff, Theo knelt down in the foliage with the spear and looked intot he clearing. He gave a low exhalation. “That thing is as big as a bear!” he muttered. It didn’t seem to notice or care they were there. “You think it got that poor bastard?” he asked, eying the corpse. It had a nice sword.

“So what’s the play here, Miss Armadillo Expert?” he asked Temisar.

Lexi chuckled. “Sure thing, love,” she told Lia. “Let me know if you need someone to carry you home after. You’d be safe with Theo,” she said, nodding to a big, dark-haired man seated at a nearby table enjoying an ale and the bard. “Give a shout if you want anything else, dearie.”

Theodore tightened the straps on his backpack, checking the quick release in case there was an unexpected fight. He stood there waiting...waiting...were they going to go? He looked up the trail. It didn’t look dangerous. He ambled along, a bit closer to the trail. “Nice day for a hike…” he commented, tossing the spear back and forth between his hands. It had a good, large head, and was nice and sharp, and had a spike on the but to set it into the ground, and a crossguard to keep a charging boar from getting too close. Good weapon.

Theodore Warsavage enjoyed the trip out in the wagon. When she was amenable, he talked with Eulalia or Temisar, and when conversation lulled, he dozed in the warm sunshine against the back of the wagon. When they stopped for lunch and to watch the mummers, he laughed loudly at the little puppet show about the spiders and the adventurers. “At least we’re just hunting giant armadillos!” he told the others with a grin.

When they turned off the road and then reached the turnaround in the forest, Theo hopped out of the wagon and offered his hand to Eulalia to help her down. Then he pulled out the large hunting spears and strapped his greatsword onto his back. He made sure his crystal focus was safely around his neck and sparked a little fire along the blade of the spear before settling it against his shoulder and looking up the trail that supposedly led to the caves. “We might need to get back before dark to make camp if this takes a while,” he commented.
