"I need to meditate a little," Temisar remarked, taking a pass on the ale. "Drink muddles my mind for that. And I prefer not to have my senses dulled while out here. I can take third or last watch. Even both, if need be."

"Assuming we could block all of the entrances...after we found them, of course," Temisar said around a bite of roasted squirrel, "Is that armadillos of any size are burrowing animals. They'd eventually get out. Smoking them out, like you suggested earlier, seems the best solution, if only just to find out how many there are. And who knows, maybe we could kill all of them in there." The last was said with a dubious tone, making it clear that Temisar suspected there were too many of them to kill.

"Well, I suppose I owe you for the kiss earlier," Temisar said with a wink, handing over the paws and pelt.

"Not enough of these to make a difference, smoke wise," Temisar observed at the couple of handfuls of peppers she had brought along, thinking the group might stay a couple of nights, "And those are some big caves. I doubt we could drive them out permanently without burning down have the local forest to produce enough smoke to do so."

Temisar rubbed her chin thoughtfully as she added, "We could drop some bundles of leaves down those mushroom holes to get them to come out during the daytime, see how many there are. And it might even force them to relocate for a night or two. So we could see just exactly how many there are, and maybe even cull a few of the stragglers off the main pack. But that cave is a good den, and animals always return to a good den, even if you make it temporarily uninhabitable. The only way we could stop them returning is burn everything in the vicinity, or kill them all off."

"We could set up in a tree, or up on top of the cliff, and shoot arrows and drop rocks on them as they come out of the cave, I suppose," Temisar mused, as she idly looked around the perimeter of the camp. "Course, regular giant armadillos have tough shells, and I don't know what the shells on these mutated ones are like. And, to be blunt, I know I could make a headshot through the eye with my bow, but the rest of you...I doubt you have the skill,"

As if to prove her point, Temisar spun around and, in quick succession, shot a squirrel looking down at the camp from a high limb, notched another arrow and shot the squirrel's companion as well. It was a shot that no one except a fellow ranger could have duplicated.

Temisar retrieved the squirrels and began skinning them. As she prepared to roast them over the fire, she continued. "The problem with trying to ambush them at that cave entrance is I suspect the armadillos have made themselves at least one other exit by now. So even if we had the patience, I doubt we could kill them all just sitting at the entrance. We'd probably have to go in. So I say we kill a couple of juveniles, and between their skins and the mushrooms, we make a few silver coins and be happy. And we let the Guard know that there aren't just a couple of armadillos up here, and they aren't anywhere near their normal size."

As Melia finished her song, the Tharkington Brothers walked in.

The Tharkington brothers were huge, the smallest one just barely two meters tall, and who looked to have shoulders as broad as they were tall. They were unrivaled warriors, knew it, and did not mind flaunting it. And each bore a tattoo, a gift from a wizard in the Marblevale Guild, which supposedly gave them resistance to low level magical spells.

Knowing that the appearance of the Tharkington brothers always meant trouble, Melia decided to take her money and call it a night. Strumming her Alderlyre, she sang:

Oh, if given the chance, to toss a coin,
To a bard, then do not pass
And thank your lovely serving wench
With a slap upon her ass

Melia found herself the target of several tossed coins, and scooped them up quickly.

And ducked out when the coin tossers began slapping the backsides of the serving wenches in the tavern. The Tharkington brothers especially seemed determined to personally spank each and every serving wench backside in the tavern, some of them repeatedly.

As the bard slipped out of the tavern, she couldn't help but grin at the sounds of a ruckus starting in the tavern behind her as she headed back to her rooms at the Guild.

Temisar climbed down on cliffside under her own power. Whatever the Sunbrawler's background, the ranger suspected he had not been climbing up and down or in and out of trees, holes and rocks for all his childhood like she had, just to earn her family a few silver coins. The only differences between the present situation and her gathering ventures as a child, Temisar reflected wryly, was that she was too big to climb down the holes here, and she never had to deal with bear-sized armadillos growing up.

"A fire and watches should suffice," the ranger said as the group got down to the bottom of the cliff. "They would for regular armadillos. They're nocturnal foragers for the most part, and even if these are...what would you call them, suprasized?...I think even these suprasized giant armadillos will stay true to their nature and avoid a fire, especially if there's insects and grubs elsewhere. But I have a small bag of cayenne peppers in the wagon we can lay out around the perimeter of our campsite, that should also act as a deterrent," Temisar added, with a nod to Sascha. Shall we get going?"

The ranger led the group back down the trail, deftly avoiding the trap on the way back to the wagon. Once they got back to the wagon, there was enough daylight left to set up a camp and get a fire going.

"They're primarily nocturnal creatures, though," Temisar interjected. So we're only going to see just a handful of them come out during the day. And I couldn't tell you how those inside that cave are going to react to the sound of one of them being killed. But you're right," the ranger added. "There was no schedule for this mission." Coiling up her rope, Temisar added, "If there's no objection, this ranger will lead the way. Back to our wagon, that is."

"Good," Temisar agreed with a smile. "We were just discussing about whether we should take the mushrooms back, and count our blessings and our profits, or try to take out this armadillo colony. I mean, I wasn't expecting them to be this big! And I've never heard of them living in close quarters like this. They will have the entrances of their lairs close to each other, but this is all of them basically living in one giant lair. I've got no idea how they'll react if we just try taking out one at a time."

"So do we take the mushrooms, not to mention our Sunbrawler friend getting a blue shiny thing on his great sword," the ranger said. pointing at the warrior, "Or do we try to tackle the whole colony? Either way, I suggest we head back to our wagon and camp there for the night. And in the morning, we can tackle the armadillos, or head back to town."

Temisar looked first at Eulalia, then at the the Sunbrawler holding a rope he had lowered down the rope for the smaller woman to take a hold of, and then back at Eulalia.

"There are easier ways of doing this, you know," Temisar told her, as she let the smaller woman catch her breath.

"So how many armadillos did you see down there?" the ranger asked. "Fifteen? Twenty? More?"

Temisar gave a tug on the rope she was holding, to signal to the little druid on the other end of the rope that it was time to ascend. "However many, I suggest we head back to the wagon and make camp for the night. Then we can decide if we want to tackle the armadillos, or just take the bags of mushroom and collect the silver they'll pay us for them."

"I suppose I'm waiting to see how much money we'll actually make before I start planning how to spend it," Temisar told the Sunbrawler. "Did, uh..." the ranger paused, before remembering the name of the woman who went down the other hole "...did Eulalia ever tie herself off to her rope?"

Temisar blinked in surprise that the two smaller women went down in the holes without much cajoling. At least the woman she had kissed had taken a rope with her down into the hole, so if something happened, Temisar would be able to pull her back up.

The ranger looked worriedly at the other hole, though. They had heard the word 'big', and nothing else. If worse came to worse...well, both of these holes were simply too small for either her to descend into, and definitely too big for the Sunbrawler to fit into.

And the Sunbrawler seemed pretty smug about that blue glow that had settled on his great sword, after the broadsword they had picked off the skeleton had simply disappeared. What was that all about? Temisar had heard stories about magical swords and wishes and all sorts of things all her life, but never about anything like blue glows moving from one sword to another. Maybe it would be worth giving a bard a silver coin if they could sing or tell a tale about blue glows and vanishing broadswords.

And speaking of bards, what were they going to do about those giant armadillos? They were big as bears! Maybe they'd be able to kill two or three, skin one for the bards, and take it back to town, along with a few sacks of golden  mushrooms, and make a few silver pieces a piece. But going in and trying to kill a cave full of bear sized armadillos? That was nuts!

Just concentrate on the job at hand, the ranger told herself. With that, she watched the tension on the rope of the  little druid as she descended into the hole to collect golden mushrooms.

Well, she scaled that quickly, Temisar thought to herself. And without proper climbing equipment, she mentally added.

Before the ranger could offer the smaller woman any assistance, she quickly disappeared down the hole up above.

When Temisar was younger and could fit down those holes, she could have scrambled in and out of them quickly. But she usually didn't descend without a rope tied around her waist, in case she got stuck and needed help back up.

Eulalia, apparently, preferred speed and stealth over security. That only confirmed Temisar's suspicions about her.

Lot of strange things going on around here, Temisar thought to herself, as she scrambled back up the cliffs to the entrance of the hole Eulalia had disappeared down. Like that broadsword the Sunbrawler had picked up, disappearing in a glow of blue light, and then that same blue light appearing around the Sunbrawler's great sword. By the grin on the Sunbrawler's face, he certainly didn[t disapprove of whatever had happened to the great sword.

Temisar reached the hole that Eulalia had disappeared down and looked in. The other woman had disappeared around a bend, out of Temisar's sight. The echo and amplification of a whisper was distorted as it reached Temisar. She couldn't tell exactly what the other woman had whispered, but she thought she heard the word 'big.'

Damn, the ranger thought to herself, I can't yell down what's wrong, just in case whatever this "big" thing is, hasn't spotted her. I'm hoping it's just one of giant giant armadillos.

Temisar wished the other woman had waited for somebody to attach a rope to her before she went down that hole. Because the ranger would definitely be hauling her up fast right now.

"Speaking of mushrooms," Temisar said, as she came sliding down the rope from the cliff, "I've got good news and bad news."

Temisar was about to say something to Theodore about his newly transformed great sword, but decided not to get distracted from what she was going to report.

"Those cave openings up there?" she said, pointing at the cliffs. "They got at an angle, before dropping straight down. So there's no way we could use them to fire down on the giant armadillos. Though as big as that one we saw come out earlier, I guess we should call them giant giant armadillos."

"So the only way we're going to get at those armadillos is to go straight in," Temisar said, pointing at the cave entrance. "And I've never tried to go an armadillo of any kind in its lair. Much less a lair I could actually walk into." Temisar shrugged as she added. "I suppose we could wait outside and wait for a few of them to come out when the sun sets, and then go in and get the rest. Or wait until tomorrow and go in there when most of them will be asleep. Though I suspect when we go in there and start killing a few, the rest will wake up."

Temisar shook her head. "Bear sized armadillos all living together in a cave. I wouldn't even know where to begin with all of that."

"But the good news with all that," Temisar said, looking back up at the smaller cave entrances on top of the cliffs, "Is all those caves up there? Chock full of golden mushrooms. I'd say twenty bags easily. They get kind of narrow, though, so we'd have to lower the smaller members of our merry band in there to pick them." Temisar eyed Sascha and Eulalia thoughtfully.

Temisar turned around, about to make a wisecrack (and where had all this newfound confidence come from?) when the broadsword Theodore had picked up started glowing blue.

"What the f---" she said, staring. The sword just glowed brighter as it turned a light, ice blue.

It feels freezing over here, Temisar thought. I can't imagine what it feels like over there.

And suddenly the light, the broadsword and the sudden temperature drop suddenly disappeared.

Theodore's great sword started glowing ice blue, and Temisar wondered if whatever had infected that broadsword was going to "freeze melt" all their weapons.

But the great sword returned to normal. Almost normal, any way. Unseen by Temisar (and presumably anyone else who didn't have sight at the hilt of Theodore's great sword), a small snowflake had been inscribed by the hilt of Theodore's sword.

"What the unnumbered hells was that?" Temisar asked, staring at Theodore.
